👨🎓👩🎓 Many Russian learners are often confused with the translation of the English phrase “you too” when responding to a greeting or a wish. Will it be translated as ВАС тоже or ВАМ тоже?

📌 ВАС тоже! (Accusative)
✅ The first test task presents a greeting (congratulation): поздравлять КОГО? (Accusative) С ЧЕМ? (Instrumental)
👉 Поздравляю тебя с Новым Годом!
👉 Поздравляю вас с Рождеством!
👉 Поздравляем вашу семью с праздником!
As you can see the recipient of the greeting is put in the Accusative case, the holiday is in the Instrumental. 🔥 And here comes the rule #1:
‼️ When responding to a greeting (congratulation) use the ACCUSATIVE form for the recipient(s): тебя / вас / вашу семью тоже!
👉 C Новым Годом! – Спасибо, ТЕБЯ тоже!
👉 С Рождеством! – И ВАС тоже, спасибо!
👉 С праздником вас и вашу семью! – И ВАШУ СЕМЬЮ тоже!
📌 ВАМ тоже! (Dative)
✅ The second test task presents a wish: Желать КОМУ? (Dative) ЧЕГО? (Genitive)
👉 Желаю тебе удачи и крепкого здоровья!
👉 Желаю вам успехов!
👉 Желаем вам и вашей семье всего самого наилучшего!
Here the recipient of the wish is put in the Dative case, the wish itself is in the Genitive. 🔥 And here comes the rule #2:
‼️ When responding to a wish use the DATIVE form for the recipient(s): тебe / вам / вашей семье тоже!
👉 Удачи и крепкого здоровья! – Спасибо, ТЕБЕ тоже!
👉 Успехов! – И ВАМ тоже, спасибо!
👉 Всего самого наилучшего вам и вашей семье! – И ВАШЕЙ СЕМЬЕ тоже!
👌 Let’s summarize it now: a greeting (congratulations) – > respond in the Accusative case; a wish -> respond in the Dative case.
